The handbooks used by candidates to prepare for the British citizenship test officially known as the Life in the UK test have had minor updates by the Home Office.

The Home Office has modified five pages of text within the handbook, but has refrained from issuing a new edition. The changes were made to correct facts regarding immigration during the 1970s, smoking laws, the structure of the Presbyterian Church and child employment law.

Henry Dillon, editor of Red Squirrel Publishing, which publishes a range of British citizenship test study guides, said that some people with earlier copies of the handbook may be at a disadvantage and should check what has changed.

“Although some of the changes may be obvious, such as the minimum legal age for buying cigarettes, there have been some large changes to the child employment section” Dillon said. “Our study guides include these changes, however if you do own an earlier impression then replacement pages can be download from our website”.

How to download replacement pages

If you have a study guide from Red Squirrel Publishing then you can download replacement pages. This is only necessary if you have:
- Study Guide fourth impression or earlier (ISBN 9780955215940)
- Study Guide + CDROM second impression or earlier (ISBN 9780955215964)
LONDON, Jan. 13 - The Polish are more "British" than the British according to new research.

The research, conducted by Red Squirrel Publishing, tested over 15,000 Facebook users using a sample version of the Home Office's citizenship exam. The results show that Polish users gained the highest average score.

The research also found that of the 11,118 British people who sat the sample test only 1,585, or 14 per cent, achieved a pass score. Britain was only ranked sixth in Red Squirrel Publishing's "Britishness" league table of nations behind Poland, Finland, Sweden, Germany and New Zealand.

Facebook users completed the sample citizenship test, which examines knowledge of British life, laws and institutions, via an application on the social networking site.

Henry Dillon, editor of Red Squirrel Publishing, which publishes a range of British citizenship test study guides, said the research provides further evidence of the challenging nature of the test.

"What these statistics show is that walking into the test without proper preparation is a recipe for failure - even British nationals struggle answering many of the questions," Dillon said. "But these figures reflect people who haven't studied for the test. Our research shows that with effective study a pass is achievable. Eighty-nine per cent of people who prepared using Red Squirrel Publishing's best-selling Life the UK Test: Study Guide passed their test on their first attempt."

Users can participate in the research by visiting http://www.lifeintheuk.net/facebook

Passing the Home Office's Life in the UK Test is a requirement for anyone wanting to apply for citizenship or settle permanently in the UK.

Over 437,000 applicants have taken the Home Office's test since it was introduced in November 2005. As of October 2007, one out of three people failed the test.

The application was launched on 1 November 2007. Facebook members from around the world were invited to participate. Within two weeks over 10,000 people had taken the online test.
Recent market analysis shows that Red Squirrel Publishing titles are having a big impact in their sector of the book market. Red Squirrel have four titles in the top 10, according to The Bookseller.

Red Squirrel Publishing has been helping people pass the Life in the UK test since shortly after the test was introduced in 2005. The initial entry to the market was a study guide for test applicants containing official material from the Home Office and advice on how to prepare for the test. Subsequent editions of this publication have been expanded, developed and refined. And it is now complemented by a sister publication. This title contains 20 independently developed practice tests, that allow test applicants to prepare for their official test by taking sample tests that are just like the real thing.

We have known for some time that customers have benefited greatly from using the books. Over 90 percent of our customers pass the test on their first attempt. This is vastly better than the national pass rate of under 70 percent.

Now, analysis published by The Bookseller, in its edition of 12 October 2007, has confirmed that Red Squirrel publications are grabbing a big chunk of the market; mirroring the success enjoyed by our readers.

Red Squirrel titles feature four times, as the two most recent editions of both our Life in the UK test publications all make an appearance. Our titles are at positions three, six, seven and ten of The Booksellers 'Politics and Current Affairs' chart.

At Red Squirrel we are continuing to listen to the needs of our customers to ensure that our publications constantly improve and evolve to give customers the best possible resources to pass the Life in the UK test. By doing this we are confident that our titles will continue to take a big share of the market.
The Times reports on an informal test of 100 Britons who participated in a pub quiz using Red Squirrel Publishing's Life in the UK Test: Practice Questions

It is the test that every immigrant must pass to gain British citizenship, ensuring that successful applicants have a grasp of the country's life, customs and culture.

But to judge by the results of a quiz conducted in a North London pub this week, the test is too hard for most born-and-bred Britons.

The informal sitting of the test, organised by the Manifesto Club, showed that the questions were so tricky that not one of 100 British citizens was good enough to pass.

The 24-question exam was introduced in 2005 after David Blunkett, the former Home Secretary, insisted that new immigrants should grasp the English language and the nature of British life, customs and culture.
For most people applying for citizenship or settling in the UK, passing the Life in the UK Test is mandatory. However, out of every 100,000 applicants that take the test, one out of three can expect to fail.

With the requirements getting more complex, effective preparation has never been more important. But the high failure rate proves that, for many, relying on the official publication alone simply isn't enough.

With over 100,000 copies sold to date, Red Squirrel's best-selling Life the UK Test: Study Guide is the definitive companion to the official handbook, equipping applicants with the knowledge and confidence they need to pass first time.

In addition to all the relevant study materials from the official guide plus the latest changes to the immigration rules, it guides readers through the official processes, step-by-step. So at every stage applicants know what to expect and how to respond.

Difficult topics are made easy using simple diagrams, hints and tips are provided on avoiding common mistakes and a 'Useful Words to Know' section explains official terms - important if English is a second language. There's also a wealth of revision advice plus 240 practice questions based on 2007 study materials with even more available, free, online. (Visit http://www.lifeintheuk.net for a free test.)

The result is that, with the Life the UK Test: Study Guide, applicants have a head-and-shoulders advantage. 95% of our readers pass compared with the UK average of just 69% and an impressive 89% of our readers pass first-time round. Statistics that speak for themselves!

The Life the UK Test: Study Guide is available from WHSmith and other major bookstores priced just £7.99 (ISBN 978-0-9552-1594-0).

For those wanting further practice, the Life the UK Test: Practice Questions book containing over 400 questions is also available priced £5.99 (ISBN: 978-0-9552-1593-3).
Home Office releases long awaited revised study materials for the Life in the UK Test. Study materials for 'Britishness' test nearly double in size.

The revised materials have been released in a new second edition of the book 'Life in the UK: A Journey to Citizenship' which went on sale Tuesday 27 March 2007.

Applicants are required to learn materials from five chapters of the ten chapter book. This is two more chapters than was required for the test based on the first edition. The additional chapters test knowledge and understanding of employment matters and everyday needs such as housing, money, health and education.

The required materials, at 21,400 words, are nearly 10,000 words longer than the original materials – an 84% increase.

'This substantial increase in study materials highlights the need for applicants to carry out effective preparation' said a spokesperson for Red Squirrel Publishing, a company that produces study guides for the Life in the UK Test. 'Failing the test is expensive and best avoided. We would encourage anyone planning to take the test to first check their knowledge by taking a free sample test from our website http://www.lifeintheuk.net '.

Applicants will be able to take the new Life in the UK test from 2 April 2007. Until 30 June 2007, they can choose to take either the original or new Life in the UK Test.

Notes to Editors
1. The Life in the UK Test is a 24 question multiple choice test on British history, culture and values.

2. From 2 April 2007, passing the test will be a requirement for anyone wishing to apply for citizenship or settlement (also known as 'permanent residence' or 'indefinite leave to remain (ILR)') in the UK.

3. The original version of the Life in the UK Test was introduced in November 2005 and covers chapters 2, 3 and 4 of the Home Office handbook 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship'. The new 2007 version of the test will cover chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of a new edition of the same handbook.
